These mythological lions have been traditionally used in Buddhism as gate keepers and guardians of temples, homes and businesses. Traditionally believed to ward off harm, spiritual or otherwise and bring luck to the occupants, they are usually placed in front of the main door or entrance, one either side. The temple lions are considered as male and female. The female clutches a ball under her paw,(considered to be the world) and the male holds a baby lion. It is believed to be unlucky to split up a pair of temple lions, so all temple lions are sold as pairs.
